Mighty Wings

a lot of folks dont like contrails in their pictures, but i am glad there was one - a) its origin from the mountain almost gives it a volcano type of look ... and b) the geese almost seem to be riding the contrail ...

Reminds me of Mighty Wings - the song by Cheap Trick from the Top Gun soundtrack:
There's a raging fire in the sky tonight
I want to ride on the silver dove

Far into the night
Till I make you take me, on your mighty wings
Make you take me, on your mighty wings across the sky
Take me on your mighty wings
Take me on your mighty wings tonight .....

Two men in a boat ... (there was no dog!)

I took up position in the west of Lady Ann lake early in the morning today to use the chance to shoot some sunrise pictures while the day starts to grow shorter (its autumn equinox today!!) - equal days and nights (well almost - sunrise was at 6:35 am and sunset at 6.43pm). About a fortnight more for a late sunrise, before the daylight saving ends and the sun rises really early ..... got to make the most of it :)

While at the lake, I met two elderly gentlemen who were getting their boat into the lake for a fishing expedition. Glen and Charles were kind enough to manoever the the boat closer for a decent shot ... actually I managed to get several decent pictures, this not being my favorite ... i will put up the rest over the next few days - certainly a teaser to give a hint of the ones coming up ....
Needless to say the title of this post was inspired by Jerome K. Jerome's THREE MEN IN A BOAT (TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG) - i would certainly encourage you to read it - check out chapter XVII - it was there in my class X (or IX) english textbook!

Another spectacular morning at Lady Ann Lake ...

Jonathan Livingston Seagull ....

Jonathan Livingston Seagull ... and Fletcher Lynd and Martin William Seagull ... accompanying the ferry to Ocracoke ....
When you come to the edge of all the light you have known, and are about to step out into darkness, Faith is knowing one of two things will happen; There will be something to stand on, or you will be taught to fly.

Favorite of the day is a series of twilight shots from Digital Apoptosis, as he followed his grandfather life in its twlight.

Goodbye Blue Sky ...

"Look mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky"

Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter when the
promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue
sky?

Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
The flames are all gone, but the pain lingers on.

Goodbye, blue sky
Goodbye, blue sky.
Goodbye.
Goodbye.
Goodbye.

"The 11:15 from Newcastle is now approaching"
"The 11:18 arrival...."

- Pink Floyd
Goodbye Blue Sky (The Wall) - Roger Waters
Released November 30, 1979

here is my favorite for the day - by kathleen connally again - geese on the atlantic coast - i was on the atlantic coast last weekend, further south from where kathleen clicked this one, no wonder this one caught my fancy ... the geese silhouettes are cool (somehow i seem to have a fascination for reflections and silhouettes! cant seem to have enough of them ...)

Lighthouses ....

The Ocracoke Lighthouse in the Outer Banks, NC

here is some more info (From outerbanks.org):
Located in the fishing village of Ocracoke on the island of Ocracoke, this is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina and is equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens.

The present structure is the third. In 1798, a 54-foot wooden tower was built on the Ocracoke Inlet entrance where Edward Teach, otherwise known as "Blackbeard the Pirate," lived at one time. The channel shifted, rendering the lighthouse ineffective. It was replaced by a light vessel in the inlet in 1820, but by 1822 this structure was also rendered useless by shifting sands, and Congress authorized the money to build the present tower which stands 75 feet tall. The lighthouse was cemented and whitewashed in 1868, giving it the appearance it has today.

Originally fueled by whale oil, it is now lit by automatic electric power and shines 14 miles out to sea.
